Pakistan's risky militia strategy
After years of failure, the people in charge of running the "war on terror" in Pakistan's tribal areas are using militias as a new card.
But there remains a strong possibility that this strategy could make a difficult situation even worse.
Some analysts contend that it could lead to all out-war along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.
Pakistan has deployed 180,000 highly trained members of its security forces in the tribal areas for the last seven years - but they have been unable to control the few thousand militants who operate there.

The neocons killed the Republican Party. Will they stay for the funeral?
Barring a catastrophe – a terrorist attack on American soil, a calamitous gaffe, or the documented revelation that he really is a Muslim after all – it looks like Barack Obama is going to be the 44th president of these United States. Not only that, but I'd bet the farm we'll have a Democratic Congress, one with a working majority that relegates the Republicans to the role of back bench naysayers whose dissent barely registers. Last year, Paul Craig Roberts expressed the hopes of many American voters when he wrote:
"If we are fortunate, Republicans will complete their self-destruction before they extinguish the Constitution and destroy America."

Aliyev wins 89.04% of vote in Azerbaijani presidential polls
16/ 10/ 2008
BAKU, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - The incumbent Azerbaijani president, Ilham Aliyev, has gained 89.04% of the vote in presidential elections, with some 70% of the ballot counted, the South Caucasus country's top election official said on Thursday.
With around 4.8 million people registered to vote, the turnout stood at 75.65%.
None of the six opposition candidates have won more than 3% of the vote. The six main opposition parties boycotted the polls, citing a clampdown on dissent, media restrictions, and electoral fraud.
However, the CIS observer mission recognized Wednesday's elections as "legitimate, open and transparent," mission head Sergei Lebedev said on Thursday.
"The CIS [observer] mission believes that the elections were, firstly, held in compliance with Azerbaijan's election laws. Secondly, they were legitimate, open and transparent, and thirdly, we think the elections will contribute to the further democratization of Azerbaijan," Lebedev said.
The monitoring mission by the CIS, an alliance of former Soviet republics, included 394 people, including 23 long-term monitors, who attended voting at 70% of polls across the country.
A group of 40 U.S. observers comprising journalists, congressmen and political analysts also described the polls as "free and just."

Russia braces for wave of Georgian terrorism
http://www.en.rian.ru/russia/20081016/117762128.html
16/ 10/ 2008
MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russian police are preparing to thwart plans by Georgian terrorists to unleash attacks in major Russian cities in retaliation against Moscow's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, a Russian daily said on Thursday.
Izvestia published the texts of two alert notices sent to police stations nationwide, which said terrorists from Georgian radical movements had been preparing a series of attacks in cities including Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
"Moscow police have operative information indicating that unidentified members of radical groups from the Caucasus, including Patriots of Georgia, are planning to conduct a number of terrorist acts in Russia, including in Moscow," the newspaper quoted one of the documents as saying.
Another notice said: "Refugees from Abkhazia residing in St. Petersburg and Sochi are preparing to blow up a number of houses in these cities. Explosive devices will be delivered to them in October 2008."
"In addition, Patriots of Georgia are planning to use suicide bombers and a new method of terrorism - indiscriminate shooting in public places in city centers," the document said.
Moscow police did not comment on the article "to avoid spreading panic among people," but said that a large-scale anti-terrorist operation was underway in the capital.
"We will take all appropriate measures to prevent terrorist acts," a source in Moscow police told RIA Novosti.
