The Ministry of Economy estimates that in mid-2006 the total population was 2.577 million. Of those, 1.844 million were Omanis. Chief of state and government is the hereditary sultān, Qaboos bin Said Al Said, who appoints a cabinet called the "Diwans" to assist him. In the early 1990s, the sultan instituted an elected advisory council, the Majlis ash-Shura, though few Omanis were eligible to vote. Oman's armed forces, officially known as the Sultan's Armed Forces (SAF), including Royal Household troops , numbered 120,000 in 2010, consisting of: 105,000 personnel in theRoyal Army of Oman (RAO), equipped with over 1200 main battle tanks and 37 Scorpion tanks. Oman holds one of the World's largest amounts of Scud missiles , ranging at an estimate of over 30,000 ballistic missiles

here is an other view on the events in Libya
World cheers as the CIA plunges Libya into chaos
How was Libya doing under the rule of Gadaffi? How bad did the people have it? Were they oppressed as we now commonly accept as fact? Let us look at the facts for a moment.
Before the chaos erupted, Libya had a lower incarceration rate than the Czech republic. It ranked 61st. Libya had the lowest infant mortality rate of all of Africa. Libya had the highest life expectancy of all of Africa. Less than 5% of the population was undernourished. In response to the rising food prices around the world, the government of Libya abolished ALL taxes on food.

4.5 Million Orphans in Iraq... Protests Over Food and Shelter
Tensions flare in Iraq rallies
Hundreds of Iraqis have converged on Baghdad's Liberation Square as part of an anti-government rally named the Day of Rage, organised mainly through the social networking website Facebook.
About 2,000 protesters are said to have already gathered on Friday, which comes after weeks of scattered protests around the country calling for an end to corruption, shortages of jobs, food, power and water.Iraqi army helicopters buzzed overhead, while trucks took up posts throughout the square, where a groups of protesters shouted ``No to unemployment,'' and ``No to the liar al-Maliki,'' referring to Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki. Jane Arraf, reporting from Baghdad, said that a violent standoff was happening between protesters and police.
The protests also stretched from the northern city of Mosul to the southern city of Basra, reflecting the widespread anger many Iraqis feel at the government's seeming inability to improve their lives.A crowd of protesters in the northern city of Hawija, 240km north of Baghdad, tried to break into the city's municipalbuilding, according to Ali Hussein Salih, the head of the local city council.

Wisconsin: A New American Workers’ Movement
The huge protests against plans to take away workers' union rights in Wisconsin could soon spread across the whole country and all sectors of the economy.Thousands of workers demonstrated at the state capital in Madison, Wisconsin on February 15 and 16 to protest plans by that state's Republican Governor Scott Walker to take away the state workers' union rights. Walker, cleverly attempted to divide the public workers by excluding police and firefighters from his anti-union law, and the media have worked to divide public employees against private sector workers. Yet, both firemen and private sector workers showed up at the statehouse to join public workers of all sorts in what has been one of the largest workers' demonstrations in the United States in decades. Only California has seen demonstrations as large as these in recent years.

Many demonstrators, taking a clue from the rebellions against authoritarian and anti-worker governments that are sweeping the Middle East, carried signs saying, "Let's negotiate like they do in Egypt." While the situation in Wisconsin is hardly comparable to the revolution in the Arab world, what we are witnessing is the beginning of a new American workers' movement. Because this movement is so different than what many expected, it may take us by surprise.

88 killed in Mogadishu clashes
At least 8 civilians and ten Ugandan soldiers have been killed in clashes between al-Shabab fighters and government soldiers backed by African Union forces in Somalia. Al-Shabab fighters carried out a large attack on the Presidential Palace in the capital Mogadishu on Friday, a Press TV correspondent reported.
They have also taken control of more government bases in War-dhiigley District in the capital. Large numbers of people have fled the districts where fighting is going on.
This is while Somalia's Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed announced a new offensive on Wednesday and said that 17,000 African Union and Somali soldiers will continue to fight until al-Shabab's hold on Mogadishu is shattered. Somalia has been without an effective central government since former dictator Siad Barre was overthrown by warlords in 1991.

“Shortfalls in food supply do not cause widespread deaths in a democracy because vote-seeking politicians will undertake relief efforts; but even modest food shortfalls can create deadly famines in authoritarian societies.”
Ethiopia is the only country in Africa, or I may say, in the world that needs pre-emptive foreign intervention to save it from total destruction as Meles Zenawi’s regime sits on a thin ice that needs a flicker of fire to pull down his domino house of power. The ongoing winds of change that engulfed the countries to the north of Ethiopia (Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Sudan and etc) which are relatively much better, in terms of civil liberty and economic life, are bound to sweep through Ethiopia with vengeance in the very near future.
Ethiopia under the current dictatorial regime has all the ingredients that cause to trigger uncontainable mass uprising that has the potential to melt down Mele Zenawi’s regime. The forth coming uprising, unlike Egypt or Tunisia, will result rivers of blood on the streets of Addis followed by ethnic cleansing of the Tigrean people because the regime and the army that committed untold human rights violations are entirely based on one ethnic (Tigrean) group. Besides the economic and political sectors which are colonised by ethnic Tigreans, the security sector and the Army for the first time in the history of Ethiopia became the monopoly of one ethnic group -Who is who of Ethiopia’s Top Army Brass.

Introduction
The recent string of revolution in North Africa reawakened a vicarious revolutionary spirit in many of us. Some of us are denizens from nations with a history of revolution in the background, albeit either aborted or derailed to a more disastrous route. The rest of us are subjects who more or less fit a description drawn once by a sage on BBC as “the poor, the pushed-around and the never-consulted” wherefore we might be bidding our time to emulate the Tunisians and Egyptians. Being an Ethiopian, when I first heard about the sudden uprising of Tunisians and the way they refused to budge with any concession from their corrupt dictator unless he himself gets out of the picture rekindled my memory of the spontaneous popular revolution of my country that saw the collapse of Emperor Haile Selassie’s regime in 1974. Tunisian reluctance to be appeased by the dissolution of the cabinet with a replacement of a “new” one also reminded me of Ethiopians rejection of the aging Monarch’s appointment of a new Prime Minister called Endalkachew Mekonnen. Endalkachew’s plea for “patience” to the angry public that had already reached at the end of its tether was rebuffed with a wisecrack in Amharic roughly translated “Changing the stove will not make the stew any better.” So the revolution pushed on carrying a motto “Ethiopia forward! Without shedding any blood” with no known personality or group to lead it to its lofty goals. Unfortunately, the military stepped in the vacuum thereby turning the whole exercise into a nightmare. To date, Ethiopia hasn’t recovered from that experience.
Mengistu Haile Mariam
In 1974, Emperor Haile Selassie's regime had lost public confidence within Ethiopia following a famine in Wello province, leading to the Ethiopian revolution. As a result, power came into the hands of a committee of low ranking officers and enlisted soldiers led by Atnafu Abate, which came to be known as the Derg. Originally, Mengistu was one of the lesser members, officially sent to represent the Third Division because his commander, General Nega Tegnegn considered him a trouble-maker and wanted to get rid of him.[5] Between July and September 1974, Mengistu became the most influential member of the shadowy Derg, but preferred to act through more public members like his former mentor, general Aman Andom, and later Tafari Benti.[7]
Arab Unrest Propels Iran as Saudi Influence Declines
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/24/world/middleeast/24saudis.html?_r=1
For now, Iran and Syria are emboldened. Qatar and Oman are tilting toward Iran, and Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain and Yemen are in play.
MANAMA, Bahrain — The popular revolts shaking the Arab world have begun to shift the balance of power in the region, bolsteringIran’s position while weakening and unnerving its rival, Saudi Arabia, regional experts said. While it is far too soon to write the final chapter on the uprisings’ impact, Iran has already benefited from the ouster or undermining of Arab leaders who were its strong adversaries and has begun to project its growing influence, the analysts said. This week Iran sent two warships through the Suez Canal for the first time since its revolution in 1979, and Egypt’s new military leaders allowed them to pass.
Saudi Arabia, an American ally and a Sunni nation that jousts with Shiite Iran for regional influence, has been shaken. King Abdullah on Wednesday signaled his concern by announcing a $10 billion increase in welfare spending to help young people marry, buy homes and open businesses, a gesture seen as trying to head off the kind of unrest that fueled protests around the region.

Bahrain to go on nationwide strike if government refuses to resign
Protestors in Bahrain will stage more protests and a nationwide strike if the government refuses to resign on Thursday, an opposition activist told RIA Novosti.
The King of Bahrain agreed to withdraw troops from the streets of Manama and pardon political prisoners in a move to appease protestors. But he refused to dismiss the government and amend the constitution, the demands which many opposition activists see as a vital precondition for a nationwide dialog.

A suicide car bomb attack on a government security base in Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, has killed at least eight people and wounded scores of others, a police official said. The station targeted in Monday's attacks was being used as a training station for government troops. Police said there were likely to be more casualties since fragments of the bomb, shrapnel and wrecked car parts were flung across the road and into various buildings and houses. "At least six police officers were killed. Many others were wounded, the toll could be higher but I don't have more details," said Abdirahman Issa, a senior police official in the city.

Saudi Oil Production Collapse at Hand?
Some day or the other, the five million barrels per day that Saudi Arabia maintains will simply become unsustainable. This article gives us a good indication that this day is now rapidly approaching.
It is also a good indication that the field has been subjected to a maximum effort to maintain a certain daily level of production. We are now seeing the last kick at that can. The corollary of course will be precipitous decline which may well be already underway. That means the shock is coming sooner than later.
Figure that every well is pumping full out to sustain production and it is clear that it cannot be sustained. Bringing Halliburton on board now is not a good sign.
CIA agent Raymond Davis (accused for murders in Pakistan) linked to Taliban'
'CIA agent Davis linked to Taliban'
Documents show Raymond Davis, an American who killed two Pakistanis in Lahore in January, had links with CIA's espionage and sabotage plans in the Asian country.
“The documents, photographs and the evidence that has come out from Davis' sofa almost confirms his links with Taliban terrorism…the attacks on ISI and the security establishment as well as the drone attacks,” Pakistani defense analyst and security consultant Zaid Hamid said in an interview with Press TV's US Desk on Saturday.
Hamid added that there is evidence confirming Davis has been a US undercover operative in Pakistan.
“With this kind of evidence the issue is not just the assassination of those two boys on the streets of Lahore but it is an indication of a much larger network of CIA espionage and sabotage inside Pakistan,” he said.
Earlier, US President Barack Obama urged Pakistan to free the US official saying he enjoys diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention. However, under public pressure, Lahore High Court adjourned a decision on whether Davis had diplomatic immunity.

The US cast two vetoes in 2006 when the council tried to pass Arab-backed resolutions that demanded Israel end its military operations against the Gaza Strip. The other four Council's veto-wielding members -- China, Russia, Britain and France -- and the 10 elected members -- Brazil, Bosnia, Colombia, Gabon, Germany, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, Portugal and South Africa -- voted in favor of the resolution on Friday. This reflects the wide support for the draft resolution which had about 130 co-sponsors, dpa reported. The draft resolution had called for the UN Security Council to declare, "Israeli settlements established in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East al-Quds (Jerusalem), are illegal and constitute a major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace."
War and Natural Gas: The Israeli Invasion and Gaza's Offshore Gas Fields
The military invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israeli Forces bears a direct relation to the control and ownership of strategic offshore gas reserves. This is a war of conquest. Discovered in 2000, there are extensive gas reserves off the Gaza coastline. British Gas (BG Group) and its partner, the Athens based Consolidated Contractors International Company(CCC) owned by Lebanon's Sabbagh and Koury families, were granted oil and gas exploration rights in a 25 year agreement signed in November 1999 with the Palestinian Authority. The rights to the offshore gas field are respectively British Gas (60 percent); Consolidated Contractors (CCC) (30 percent); and the Investment Fund of the Palestinian Authority (10 percent). (Haaretz, October 21, 2007).
The PA-BG-CCC agreement includes field development and the construction of a gas pipeline.(Middle East Economic Digest, Jan 5, 2001). The BG licence covers the entire Gazan offshore marine area, which is contiguous to several Israeli offshore gas facilities. (See Map below). It should be noted that 60 percent of the gas reserves along the Gaza-Israel coastline belong to Palestine. The BG Group drilled two wells in 2000: Gaza Marine-1 and Gaza Marine-2. Reserves are estimated by British Gas to be of the order of 1.4 trillion cubic feet, valued at approximately 4 billion dollars. These are the figures made public by British Gas. The size of Palestine's gas reserves could be much larger.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant, launched in August 2010, is expected to generate electricity in the near future. The latest US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) has reiterated its 2007 position that the Islamic Republic of Iran is not after nuclear arms.US spy agencies have concluded in the report that Iran has not decided whether to develop atomic weapons, Reuters reported on Thursday. The 2007 NIE report on Iran reversed the US intelligence community's previous assessment in 2005 that Tehran was running a covert nuclear weapons program. Iran says its nuclear program is solely aimed at peaceful purposes, but Washington and its allies have repeatedly accused Tehran of intending to run a nuclear arm program. Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has made clear that atomic weapons are against core principles of Islam, mainly due to their mass destructive nature.

BAHRAIN - The Lulu Massacre ..
there is currently a massacre taking place in Manama , the capital of Bahrain. Most of you know that Bahrain is currently witnessing huge protests demanding political reforms. The political scene in Bahrain was boiling for long time and the #25Jan revolution came to give a huge force to the Bahraini activists who decided to push the bar against their regime. There were protesters in the past couple of days , two protesters were killed , one of them actually was killed in the funeral of the first protesters. People were extremely angry and the Bahraini protesters decided to have an open sit it at the Manama’s biggest squares : Lulu square or the Pearl square. They spent last night there and today as well.King Hamad as you have heard gave a speech where he expressed his sorrow for the murder of these two protesters and said that there would be an investigation. Just like Al Tahrir , the Lulu square became a tent city for strikes , the protesters demanded political reforms. The latest and most important demand was turning the country in to a constitutional monarchy. Now at 2 AM or 3 AM Manama local time we found the security forces storming the Lulu square , killing not less than 4 including old man and injuring hundreds who were rushed in to the Salmaniya hospital. Here is a video showing police forces cracking down a peaceful march at the Lulu square.

Opéra Bouffe.
