Iran satellite successfully completes mission

Iran's first domestically-launched satellite successfully completes its mission after orbiting the Earth more than 700 times in seven weeks. Iran placed its first domestically-manufactured lightweight telecommunication satellite into orbit on February 3 -- joining a small group of countries that have the ability of both producing satellites and sending them into space using domestic launchers. "The Omid (Hope) satellite completed all its tasks without any problems ... and will remain in orbit for another 38 days before re-entering the atmosphere," IRIB quoted space expert Asghar Ebrahimi as saying on Thursday. He added that the satellite, which has been designed for gathering information and testing equipment, received and sent text and telecommunication signals while orbiting Earth. Omid will land with data that will help Iranian scientists send an operational satellite into space. Iran revealed that it was manufacturing seven new satellites, within a few days of placing Omid into orbit. "Our scientists are building seven other satellites, four of which are for low altitudes," Fars news agency had quoted Iranian Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Soleimani as saying. Soleimani noted that the low-orbit satellites that are being designed and constructed based on a "fixed timetable" would weigh less than 100 kilograms.
