At least three people, including two children, were killed and more than 20 wounded in two terrorist attacks carried out in a provincial capital in southern Afghanistan, local authorities said on Sunday. Both blasts occurred in the town of Lashkar Gah in the Helmand province. The first bomb went off in front of a bank and the second near a local school in the center of the town, the authorities said. "A girl, a boy and a woman were killed in the blasts," the authorities said. The injured were taken to the local hospital with wounds of various gravity, the authorities said. Violence has surged in Afghanistan in recent months, with the radical Islamic Taliban group, which was toppled in a 2001 U.S.-led campaign, staging regular attacks on provincial government officials, police and civilians and planting roadside bombs to target Afghan, U.S. and NATO troops.
