Απαράδεκτα φαινόμενα στο Αγ Παντελεήμονα - Apartheid in the centre of Athens !!

not yet there .. but close

We thought this was only in the past .

Ιn St Pandeleimonas playground in the centre of Athens, we are very close to see this to become real..

It is unacceptable what is happening in St. Panteleimon play ground in the Centre of Athens. Not only is the most racist and xenophobic mood developed to the residents who often outraged by the degradation of their region, attack immigrants while they themselves are victims of neo-fascists organizations like Hrysi Avgi in fish cloudy water, but the fact that the official state acts against the law. The members of Hrysi Avgi with some local residents LOCKED a play ground for Children in the area , because the majority of the children there are immigrants !! During an attempt by anti racist organisations to reopen the Playground that was iligally locked, the police came to protect and help in fact the Neo NAZI organisation Hrysi Avgi..

Russia source says North Korea readying launches

Russia source says North Korea readying launches long-range missile
http://garizo.blogspot.com/2009/06/north-korea-assembles-long-range.html
A Russian Foreign Ministry source on Tuesday said there were signs that North Korea was preparing new missile launches, Interfax news agency reported. After a nuclear test in May, Pyongyang conducted missile launches. South Korea said the North was preparing to test a long-range missile capable of reaching U.S. territory and mid-range missiles that could strike South Korea or Japan."Information is coming to us that there are signs of preparations for the launch of missiles," the unnamed Russian source was quoted as saying. The diplomat said North Korea's temporary ban on navigation in certain areas of the Yellow and Japan Seas was an indication it was preparing to conduct a missile test, Interfax reported. The source did not clarify what type of launch was anticipated."We have not received any formal information about this from the North Korean side," the source was quoted as saying. Russian authorities regularly release information to local news agencies via unnamed foreign ministry officials.

Chinese Develop Special "Kill Weapon" to Destroy U.S. Aircraft Carriers

Chinese Develop Special "Kill Weapon" to Destroy U.S. Aircraft Carriers
With tensions already rising due to the Chinese navy becoming more aggressive in asserting its territorial claims in the South China Sea, the U.S. Navy seems to have yet another reason to be deeply concerned. After years of conjecture, details have begun to emerge of a "kill weapon" developed by the Chinese to target and destroy U.S. aircraft carriers.First posted on a Chinese blog viewed as credible by military analysts and then translated by the naval affairs blog Information Dissemination, a recent report provides a description of an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) that can strike carriers and other U.S. vessels at a range of 2000km. The range of the modified Dong Feng 21 missile is significant in that it covers the areas that are likely hot zones for future confrontations between U.S. and Chinese surface forces. The size of the missile enables it to carry a warhead big enough to inflict significant damage on a large vessel, providing the Chinese the capability of destroying a U.S. supercarrier in one strike. Because the missile employs a complex guidance system, low radar signature and a maneuverability that makes its flight path unpredictable, the odds that it can evade tracking systems to reach its target are increased. It is estimated that the missile can travel at mach 10 and reach its maximum range of 2000km in less than 12 minutes. Supporting the missile is a network of satellites, radar and unmanned aerial vehicles that can locate U.S. ships and then guide the weapon, enabling it to hit moving targets. The ASBM is said to be a modified DF-21. While the ASBM has been a topic of discussion within national defense circles for quite some time, the fact that information is now coming from Chinese sources indicates that the weapon system is operational. The Chinese rarely mention weapons projects unless they are well beyond the test stages. If operational as is believed, the system marks the first time a ballistic missile has been successfully developed to attack vessels at sea. Ships currently have no defense against a ballistic missile attack. Along with the Chinese naval build-up, U.S. Navy officials appear to view the development of the anti-ship ballistic missile as a tangible threat. After spending the last decade placing an emphasis on building a fleet that could operate in shallow waters near coastlines, the U.S. Navy seems to have quickly changed its strategy over the past several months to focus on improving the capabilities of its deep sea fleet and developing anti-ballistic defenses.
The development programme has been confirmed by both US government and Asian military sources, with the latter estimating that the PLA may be able to deploy the space targeting systems needed to make its anti-ship ballistic missile operational by 2009. PLA efforts to provide terminal guidance capabilities to both its 600 km-range DF-15 (CSS-6) short-range ballistic missile and DF-21 (CSS-5) medium-range ballistic missile with a range of 2,150 km, or 2,500 km for the DF-21A (CSS-5 Mod 2), have been known since the mid-1990s. The existence of a terminally guided DF-21C has long been reported. Asian military sources said that the PLA will be using a version of the DF-21 for its ballistic anti-ship missions side by side with the Russian 3M-54E - "Sizzler" crusing missile making the U.S. Aircraft Carriers Vulnerable to Attack

By David Cranedefrev- April 6, 2009
I’ve been writing about the
vulnerability of U.S. Navy surface ships, particularly large expensive aircraft carriers, against other countries’ anti-ship cruise missiles and torpedoes for awhile, now. Specifically, I’ve focused on the latest crop of supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles and supercavitating torpedoes, even though some argue that long-range wake-homing torpedos pose a greater threat to our warships than the supercavitating variety. Well, that debate may be a moot point due to China’s development of an advanced long-range anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) "kill weapon" that can reportedly target, track, and destroy U.S. surface ships, including aircraft carriers, in a single strike without being nuclear tipped, due to its size. This makes the ASBM "kill weapon" the… first ballistic misssile to be successfully developed specifically to attack surface ships. According to a U.S. Naval Institute (USNI) report, the missile has range of 2000 kilometers (2000km) (approximately 1,240 miles) and can reach an aircraft carrier or any other surface ship within 12 minutes at that range.USNI also reports that the Chinese ASBM "kill weapon" employs a complex guidance system, low radar signature (i.e. low-observability, or "stealth" aspects), and "maneuverability that makes its flight path unpredictable, and thus better able to evade tracking and interception. The news of this new ship-killing weapon has, according to USNI, caused "panic inside the [U.S. Navy leadership] bubble", causing a major sea change (excuse the pun) in U.S. Navy focus strategy away from an emphasis on littoral combat ships designed to operate in shallow water near coastlines and toward improving the capabilities of deap-sea war ships and "developing anti-ballistic defenses". The U.S. Navy’s reaction to the Chinese ASBM threat leads the USNI believe it’s legitimate. At this moment in time, DefenseReview isn’t aware of any viable U.S. ship-borne defense system that can effectively deal with the Chinese anti-ship ballistic missile. If one of our readers is aware of one, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If the U.S. Navy indeed doesn’t have a viable defense agains the Chinese ASBM, the first three obvious questions are "why not", "how long will it take to develop one", and "how much will it cost". Defense Review doesn’t doubt for a second that we can do it, it’s just a question of "how long" and "how much".

NATO launches another provocation against Russia - Baltops 2009

Obama solving the "Piracy" problem in Baltic sea ..(Baltops 09)

In addition to the maneuvers in Georgia, NATO launched another event near Russia’s borders. This time the drills take place in the north, in Scandinavian countries and in the Baltic States. Over 2,000 servicemen from ten countries of the alliance (Britain, Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, the USA, France and Estonia) participate in ten-day Baltops-2009 drills which are held within the scope of NATO’s Partnership for Peace Program. Finland and Sweden, which do not hold NATO’s membership, provided their territories, army bases and troops for the drills. First priority is given to aviation, including carrier aviation: Britain’s Illustrious aircraft carrier arrived in the Baltic Sea to participate in the event. Fifty multi-mission fighters, bomber aircraft and cargo planes will be involved in the largest military drills that have ever been held on the territories of Finland and Sweden, the two neutral states. What do Finland and Sweden want from the drills? A spokesperson for Sweden’s Defense Ministry said that the nation intended to prepare its troops for air operations. The official also said that the Baltic Sea provided a unique opportunity for the drills taking into consideration the intense freight traffic activity. The new drills do not violate any regulations. Non-NATO members are entitled to participate in the drills, which the alliance holds. Konstantin Sivkov, a military expert with the Academy for Geopolitical Sciences, told Pravda.Ru that the West was most likely working on the establishment of the new world order. “The fact that two neutral states - Finland and Sweden - participate in NATO’s drills shows that there is a wider bloc being formed in the West,” he said. “The West intends to redistribute primary resources against the background of the ongoing economic crisis. It is possible to obtain cheap raw materials militarily. The fact that right and ultra-right factions win the recent elections to the European Parliament is quite indicative. The same was taking place during the 1930s, which also coincided with the global economic crisis. A war proved to be a way out of the crisis back in those years. It looks like history repeats itself today. “As far as Russia is concerned, the country finds itself between wind and water. NATO is holding its drills near Russia’s southern and northern borders, which is not incidental. The alliance approaches Georgia as a springboard to capture the energy resources of the Caspian Sea region. The north is attractive for the opportunity to attack Russia’s key centers,” the expert said. Indeed, the drills are not being held within the scope of either the struggle against international terrorism or the intention to practice rescuing operations under the conditions of natural disasters. The Loyal Arrow exercise was formally announced as the event to train the cooperation of aviation units in the regulation of international armed conflicts. As a matter of fact, NATO is working on radio interception, countermeasures activity, air and sea battles. To put it in a nutshell, NATO organized the exercise to train the destruction of enemy’s operational aircraft and navy, which al-Qaida does not have, of course Russia was a regular member of such drills since 1993. Moscow decided to cease its participation in NATO’s maneuvers after Georgia’s aggression against South Ossetia in August 2008. Nearly a year has passed, but the relations between Russia and the alliance have not improved. It may seem at first sight that the current drills in the Baltic Sea do not deserve a lot of attention. Western journalists say that it was Russia’s decision to pull out from the drills in which the nation participated previously. Nevertheless, the maneuvers near Russia’s borders in the north and in the south are obviously a provocative act

N. Korea sentences 2 U.S. journalists to 12 years of hard labor

N. Korea sentences 2 U.S. journalists to 12 years of hard labor
SEOUL (NYT) — North Korea on Monday sentenced two American journalists to 12 years of hard labor in a case widely seen as a test of how far the socialist state was willing to take its confrontational stance toward the United States. The Central Court, the highest court of North Korea, held the trial of the two Americans, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, from Thursday to Monday and convicted them of “committing hostilities against the Korean nation and illegal entry,” the North’s official news agency, KCNA, said in a report monitored in Seoul. Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee have been held since they were detained by North Korean soldiers patrolling the border between China and North Korea on March 17. The United States government had demanded that the North forgo the legal proceedings and release the two women. The sentencing came amid rising tensions between Washington and Pyongyang. Earlier Monday, North Korea threatened to retaliate with “extreme” measures if the United Nations punished it for its nuclear test last month, and Washington warned that it might try to put the North back on its list of states that sponsor terrorism. “Our response would be to consider sanctions against us as a declaration of war and answer it with extreme hard-line measures,” the North Korea’s state-run newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said in a commentary. Ms. Ling and Ms. Lee were on a reporting assignment from Current TV, a San Francisco-based media company co-founded by Al Gore, the former vice president, when they were detained by the soldiers. The reporters were working on a report about North Korean refugees. The circumstances surrounding their capture remain unclear. Analysts said they were a pawn in a rapidly deteriorating confrontation between the United States and North Korea — a potential bargaining chip for the Pyongyang and a handicap for Washington in its efforts to pressure the government over its recent missile and nuclear tests. Defying not only its traditional foes — the United States, Japan and South Korea — but also its longtime ideological allies, China and Russia, North Korea launched an intermediate-range rocket on April 5 and conducted an underground nuclear test on May 25.

Because EU is not the centre of the Universe .. IRAN Elections..

Streets heat up with election fervor
TEHRAN - The televised debates between the candidates running in Iran’s 10th presidential election have raised the level of excitement on Iran’s streets. With just 72 hours until the election, Iran’s streets are full of life. Young supporters of the various hopefuls are jubilantly campaigning in the street for their preferred candidates. Street debates on the main squares remind one of the atmosphere of the revolution in 1979. Cars have been converted into election campaign offices. Everywhere young people are wearing green, the color of Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s campaign, and waving Iran’s flag as a sign of support for the incumbent president. Posters are scattered all over the streets. The main squares have become centers for debating the strong and weak points of each candidate. It is interesting that the street debates, which lasted until midnight during the first days of the campaign, have become longer and longer every day and now drag on to 2 am. Except for a few minor scuffles between supporters of rival candidates, the election has been quite peaceful. Boisterous people cheer and others beep their car horns incessantly as the election campaign heats up. The police held a meeting with MPs in which they said the electoral rules and regulations must be fully observed. In the meeting, officials told election campaign office staff members that they are bound by law to tell their candidates’ supporters that they must not disturb the peace, obstruct streets, insult supporters of other candidates, chant divisive slogans, violate others’ rights, or tear down posters and banners of other candidates. Election campaign offices’ representatives have always underscored the importance of maintaining order and security. Thus, in order to uphold the dignity of the people and Iran and to ensure that the election is held smoothly, it was agreed that some special plans and strategies should be adopted and election campaign office staff members should be briefed about them. Commenting on the occurrence of some disturbances during the first days and nights of the campaign, the deputy operations commander of the national police said, “The police will take legal action against anyone who breaks the law through non-stop beeping and making noise.” So far, no cars of campaigners have been impounded by the police, Brigadier General Hossein Sajedinia added. “But the police will take action against anyone who sticks huge posters on their cars,” he noted. The police have rejected the rumor that the commander of its traffic control headquarters had said that people who place posters on their cars would be fined 70,000 rials. The tactics of person-to-person campaigning and street campaigning were first employed by Mousavi’s supporters, but in recent days they have also been utilized by Ahmadinejad supporters. Campaigners address passers-by in the streets trying to persuade them to vote for their candidate. Mahdi Karrubi’s supporters are also using these tactics. A glance at the street campaigns in Iran’s cities clearly shows that the predictions of an election boycott are nonsense. Citizens are curious to know what is being said in the street debates and get out of their cars to become informed. Many people take part in these discussions to express their ideas about the national situation. These are some of the good points about the election campaign. However, some reprehensible actions, like splashing paint on rival candidates’ banners and tearing down their posters, have also occurred. This excitement and eagerness shows that the majority of the Iranian people believe the election is important and will definitely not boycott it.

Has the threat of a Great Depression vanished?

Has the threat of a Great Depression vanished?

Still not convinced? Green shoots are sprouting into a jungle around the world. Consider a few of the economic indicators published in the past two weeks: British house prices have risen in two of the past three months. Japan has experienced its biggest monthly increase in industrial production since the Fifties. Consumer and business sentiment are rising strongly in the United States and Britain and are even showing some signs of life in Europe. In America, where all the trouble started, unemployment claims have fallen, durable goods orders and property sales have bounced back and house prices have stabilised, although not yet in the 20 boom-bust cities sampled by the Case-Shiller index, which the markets, in their wisdom, have chosen to emphasise. The list of bullish statistics could go on, but it can be best be summarised in the market's own judgment world share prices have enjoyed a three-month rally, led by commodities, retailers and financials, capital markets have re-opened, with record issuance of equities and corporate bonds, credit spreads have narrowed and government bond prices have fallen in exactly the way they did at the start of the recovery in 2003. Yet most economic commentators have remained sceptical or even contemptuous of all this evidence. Surely, they argue, the threat of another Great Depression could not just have vanished in a puff of statistics? Is anyone so naive as to think that a crisis caused by over-leveraging can be solved by government borrowing and money-printing?

Actually, some people are so naive. I have always believed, for example, that private sector de-leveraging can, in principle, be outweighed by fiscal and monetary expansion, provided that this is aggressive enough. I also felt that the Great Recession was not some divine retribution for the moral turpitude of greedy bankers and pampered consumers but actually an avoidable accident, caused mainly by the incompetence of the Bush Administration's handling of Lehman and Fannie Mae. From this standpoint, there is nothing surprising about the recent improvement in economic conditions. From a financial standpoint, the scepticism of media and market commentators is a cause for confidence, not concern. Bull markets always tend to “climb a wall of worry” because the inflow of money from sceptics as they become believers is what gives the uptrend its staying power. From this point of view, lurid media headlines can be regarded as encouraging. Nobody should be surprised that sterling shot up in response to the ludicrous story about a downgrade in the British Government's debt. Looking beyond the media hype, are there genuine reasons for worry? In meetings with businessmen and investors, I find anxieties focus on Seven Deadly Sins, which could yet set the world back on the path to economic perdition:

1. Rising bond yields could crush growth and produce a W-shaped recession.

2. America and Britain could follow Japan's experience, when government support for “zombie banks” thwarted economic growth.

3. Consumer and business de-leveraging, driven by collapsing property prices, could stifle any recovery.

4. Fiscal deficits could threaten government solvency or force central banks into printing money Zimbabwe-style.

5. Inadequate consumption in China, Germany and Japan could prevent a rebalancing of the world economy and create new asset bubbles.

6. Financial stability could be shattered by another bank crisis, probably in Europe.

7. Structural inflation, created by unions, protectionism and energy cartels, could turn a cyclical stagnation into long-term “stagflation”.

The first four are greatly exaggerated, but the last three may be understated. Let me explain:

Bond yields always rise in economic recoveries without causing W-shaped recessions. The only exception was the US in 1981, when the Fed increased overnight interest rates by ten percentage points to control runaway inflation - hardly likely in 2009. Moreover, stronger economic prospects have narrowed credit spreads. The price and availability of money for businesses and homeowners is improving, even as bond yields rise. Japan's experience of supporting “zombie” banks coincided with long-term economic stagnation. But the question is whether government support for weak banks caused economic stagnation or whether economic stagnation prevented banks getting stronger. The same question must be asked about an IMF study, which shows that recessions accompanied by banking crises last longer than others. These banking crises were accompanied by extreme fiscal and monetary contractions. In contrast, the Eighties' Third World debt crisis, when US banks traded their way out of insolvency, did not lead to recession but coincided with the strongest period of economic growth in history. Lost housing wealth probably does mean slower US and British consumption growth. But most of the increase in savings has likely already occurred. In the US, the household savings rate has risen from 0.1 per cent a year ago to 4.2per cent, its highest level since 1994. Savings will probably rise until next year, but after that US and British consumption should grow in line with personal incomes. After that, most of the debt reduction will occur in the financial sector. Moreover, a further big fall in US house prices is unlikely since prices have already overshot on the downside. In Britain, recent signs of housing strength suggest that supply restrictions may have created a long-term up-trend in valuations. Fiscal and monetary policies do not pose anything like the threat generally believed. The deficits now planned by the US and British Governments follow many years of debt reduction relative to GDP. As a result, their debt burdens will remain well below the levels of 100 per cent of GDP, levels typical for much of the 20th century. There is no more reason to worry about fiscal solvency in the US or Britain than in Germany and France (see chart). The only large economies that could face genuine solvency threats are Italy and Japan and, significantly, their bond markets show no signs of alarm. Meanwhile, the near- doubling of central bank money in Britain, the US and the eurozone should not lead to inflation, unless it is lent to the private sector by banks. So far, this is not happening. Once banks do resume lending, monetary conditions will have to be tightened, by forcing commercial banks to hold higher reserves of central bank money than before. Now for the bad news. There remain three genuine reasons to worry about the medium-term outlook. A rebalancing of growth is required between consumers in America, Britain, Spain and Central Europe and producers in China, Japan and Germany. It is far from clear whether this will occur and the difficulty of achieving this rebalancing could trigger a financial crisis within the eurozone. Further ahead, it is possible that inflationary pressures will revive, even in conditions of high unemployment and low capacity utilisation, if global competition is thwarted by unions, protectionist governments or commodity cartels. A return to Seventies-style stagflation is a genuine medium-term threat. So if you want real reasons to worry about inflation, look at trade, energy and labour policies, not at public deficits and central banks.

Iran Signs Major Gas Deal With China; Is Europe Next?

Iran Signs Major Gas Deal With China; Is Europe Next?
Iran has found its long-sought-after partner to help develop part of the world's largest natural-gas field, even as the possibility of linking it to a future pipeline to Europe seemed to rise. China came out the big winner on June 3 when representatives from the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) met in the Chinese capital and signed a $4.7 billion contract for developing Phase 11 of the South Pars gas field. South Pars, shared between Iran and Qatar, has estimated gas reserves of some 14 trillion cubic meters, enough to supply Europe's gas needs for about a quarter of a century. The CNPC's gain is the French energy company Total's loss. In 2004, Total signed a memorandum of understanding with NIOC to develop Phase 11, one of 24 sections that make up the Iranian part of South Pars, and among those with the highest potential. However, according to Iranian officials, the French company delayed signing the final agreements for too long, despite warnings from Tehran that time was running out. Total said just a few months ago it would not be ready to sign such a contract for some time yet. Total, in an official statement released on June 3, said it still wants to be part of the deal, but that does not appear to be an option. However, the Iranian government is offering the French company an opportunity to participate in the development of other sections of South Pars and in the production of liquefied natural gas. NIOC managing director Seifollah Jashnsaz, who was in Beijing for the signing, told reporters he hoped daily production at the site would reach some 50 million cubic meters (some 18 billion cubic meters annually). The deal is a boon for China because the country's continued economic growth hinges on access to energy resources. Iran profits not only from the Chinese investment but also from a high-profile agreement that demonstrates Tehran can attract partners to major projects, despite international sanctions.
Nabucco Hopes !!
Meanwhile, in comments that highlight Iran's potential as an energy exporter, U.S. special energy envoy Richard Morningstar on June 4 left the door open for Iran to participate in the Nabucco pipeline project if relations between Washington and Tehran were normalized. However, Morningstar explained clearly that including Iran in the project -- an EU-led initiative that Brussels hopes can pipe Caspian and/or Middle East gas from the South Caucasus, across Turkey, and into Europe -- without first resolving the issue of Iran's nuclear-development program could "have a negative effect." This comes at a time when the new U.S. administration is calling for renewed dialogue with Iran. Morningstar was speaking in Turkey, which plays a key role in the Nabucco project. Technically, the project description on Nabucco's website describes the pipeline as "starting at the Georgian/Turkish and/or Iranian/Turkish border." While Nabucco's route is fairly certain, its sources of gas are not. Nabucco plans to bring some 31 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas annually and hopes to include gas from the Caspian Basin and Middle East in the pipeline. But so far, Azerbaijan and Egypt seem to be the only committed suppliers -- providing only enough gas for the first phase of the project (8 bcm annually). None of the Central Asian states have made any specific pledges to supply gas for Nabucco. Iraq appears to be interested but that gas is in Iraq's Kurdish region and the regional government there and central government in Baghdad are not in agreement on all the details of gas sales. Iran, with the second-largest gas reserves in the world, could fill Nabucco by itself. Nabucco's website indicates the pipeline's shareholders envision a day such as the one Morningstar spoke of, when better relations between Iran and the United States remove the obstacles to Iran's participation in energy-resource development and exports.

China ready to build its first aircraft carrier

China ready to build its first aircraft carrier

HONG KONG, June 4 (UPI) -- Shipbuilding experts from Eastern Europe have confirmed that the People's Republic of China will start to build its own aircraft carrier this year, as preparations for the project are complete. Τhe experts had visited the No. 3 military dock of the Changxing Island Shipyard -- the new location of the Jiangnan Shipyard, known as the cradle of China's defense industry -- based in Shanghai, where they acquired exclusive photos of the interior of the shipyard. From these it can be deduced that China is ready to commence building the aircraft carrier at this dock.

Chinese armed police have dramatically strengthened their watch on Dock No. 3. All the entrances to and exits from this dock are under armed police guard, with plainclothes police on patrol. In contrast, the entrances to Dock No. 1, where civilian ships are built, are guarded only by shipyard security staff. Dock No. 3 is 580 meters long, 120 meters wide, and completely encircled by a wall at least 2.5 meters high. A giant gantry crane has been built, with a capacity to lift at least 600 tons. The dock is large enough to build a medium-sized conventional aircraft carrier similar to the Russian Admiral Kuznetsov class with a light load displacement of about 50,000 tons. The outfitting quay for No. 3 Dock has been finished and includes a large gantry crane. According to the Eastern European sailors who visited the shipyard, the quay is 8 kilometers long and was finished in the fall of 2008. A number of large containers have been shipped to the area near the dock. Among senior shipbuilding experts from Germany, France and Italy who examined the shipyard photos, one suggested the containers might be loaded with oxygen supplies and power-generating equipment, as huge amounts of oxygen and power would be required for welding engineering. An Eastern European source familiar with the aircraft carrier project told United Press International that China had invested $5.1 billion in the facilities at Changxing Island, including three gigantic joint-structured indoor assembly workshops in which the separate sections of the carrier would be built. The expert from the French shipbuilding industry said these facilities could be used for processing steel plates and section materials, or the preliminary treatment or assembly of separate sections of the carrier.Sources have informed United Press International that the shipyard and all its facilities were built at a very fast pace. A separate road network was finished around January 2007 to provide safety and security for the project. Despite attempts at secrecy, many residents of the nearby Changxing township knew that the shipyard was being readied to make China's first aircraft carrier. The facilities include numerous five-story buildings -- accommodations for nearly 60,000 peasant laborers hired to build the aircraft carrier facilities -- that have been in use since early this year. A correspondent for Kanwa Defense Review visited the area to interview peasant workers recruited for this project. The workers said they were paid from $440 to $585 per month, which is three or four times what an ordinary laborer in Shanghai can earn, and that their living conditions were very good. The round-shaped headquarters building was to be finished this spring. Free-standing residential buildings in red and gray have been constructed for the shipbuilding experts. Satellite photos show that these houses are quite luxurious.Judging from the size of the three gigantic joint-structured indoor assembly workshops affiliated to Dock No. 3, it is fully possible that the separate modules of the ship will be built in these workshops and finally assembled at the dock.Sources told United Press International that China intends to build, equip and launch its first aircraft carrier -- internally named "Beijing" -- between 2009 and 2015. It is possible that the process could take longer, however. The first steps will include the processing and cutting of steel plates and section materials as well as the assembly of sectional parts. When the keel is laid down it will be difficult to keep it secret, as the keel of the aircraft carrier must be towed to the dock in one piece.

OBAMA'S SPEECH IN CAIRO ...

OBAMA'S SPEECH IN CAIRO ( <
I am honored to be in the timeless city of Cairo, and to be hosted by two remarkable institutions. For over a thousand years, Al-Azhar has stood as a beacon of Islamic learning, and for over a century, Cairo University has been a source of Egypt's advancement. Together, you represent the harmony between tradition and progress. I am grateful for your hospitality, and the hospitality of the people of Egypt. I am also proud to carry with me the goodwill of the American people, and a greeting of peace from Muslim communities in my country: assalaamu alaykum. We meet at a time of tension between the United States and Muslims around the world – tension rooted in historical forces that go beyond any current policy debate. The relationship between Islam and the West includes centuries of co-existence and cooperation, but also conflict and religious wars. More recently, tension has been fed by colonialism that denied rights and opportunities to many Muslims, and a Cold War in which Muslim-majority countries were too often treated as proxies without regard to their own aspirations. Moreover, the sweeping change brought by modernity and globalization led many Muslims to view the West as hostile to the traditions of Islam. . ...
...We have the power to make the world we seek, but only if we have the courage to make a new beginning, keeping in mind what has been written.
The Holy Koran tells us, "O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another."
The Talmud tells us: "The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace.
" The Holy Bible tells us, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God."
The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is God's vision. Now, that must be our work here on Earth. Thank you. And may God's peace be upon you.

North Korea assembles long-range missile

North Korea has started to assemble a long-range missile which is capable of reaching the United States, South Korean media reported on Wednesday. The missile is believed to be a version of the rocket which North Korea fired in April. It has a range of up to 6.500 kilometers, which would put the American state of Alaska within reach

North Korea's 'Calculated Chess Move'

North Korea's 'Calculated Chess Move'

un Zhe is a professor at the Institute for International Studies at Beijing's Tsinghua University. In an interview with SPIEGEL,

he discusses North Korea's recent nuclear tests, the friction they have caused with China and how China and the US can bring North Korea to the negotiating table.

SPIEGEL: Despite China and North Korea being close allies, Beijing failed to stop Kim Jong Il from conducting another nuclear test. Has China lost its influence over its former comrade in arms?

Sun Zhe: The North Koreans certainly did not listen to us. They currently don't view their relations with Beijing as a strategic priority. Their policies are completely oriented toward the Americans. There, they are playing a high-stakes game of poker.

SPIEGEL: What do the North Koreans really want?

Sun: They want to be treated as an equal partner by the US and by the other Western countries. And they absolutely want to have diplomatic relations with Washington.

SPIEGEL: And for that you have to detonate atomic bombs?

Sun: On the face of it, it indeed seems very strange. But it is a precisely calculated chess move. The North Koreans want to be noticed; they want to show something. However, with their tests, they disregarded the fact that the world is currently preoccupied with the financial crisis and swine flu.

SPIEGEL: What should Beijing's reaction be?

Sun Zhe: The North Koreans certainly did not listen to us. They currently don't view their relations with Beijing as a strategic priority. Their policies are completely oriented toward the Americans. There, they are playing a high-stakes game of poker.

SPIEGEL: What do the North Koreans really want?

However, with their tests, they disregarded the fact that the world is currently preoccupied with the financial crisis and swine flu.

SPIEGEL: What should Beijing's reaction be?

SPIEGEL: The North Koreans don't really seem all that bothered by sanctions.

Sun: Right. And that's why I think it is more important for our government to start talking with the Americans again.

SPIEGEL: To what purpose?

Sun: President Barack Obama should resume normal relations with North Korea, send some professors to Pyongyang and do something. That's the only chance for bringing North Korea to its senses. In Washington, there are more and more voices calling for a rethinking of America's policies toward North Korea. China should also work on this issue through talks with the US. We don't need hard sanctions; we need a strategy of "soft landing" for East Asia.

GM ready to file for bankruptcy

Car giant General Motors is expected to file for bankruptcy protection later on Monday, marking the biggest failure of an industrial company in US history. The stricken firm had until 1 June to present a viable revival plan in return for emergency government funding. Reports say a majority of bondholders have now agreed to a deal giving them at least a 10% stake in what is likely to emerge as a much smaller company. President Barack Obama is due to give full details at a news conference. The BBC's Jonathan Beale, in Detroit, says Mr Obama is expected to announce $30bn (£18.5bn) in new funding for GM. GM's sales have been hit hard by the financial crisis and the firm has received $20bn in state aid. In return for more cash the federal government is reported to be receiving a stake of 60% in a new, leaner company due to be re-launched within 90 days. Senior executives at General Motors have been making final preparations for completely restructuring what was once the world's largest car company, under judicial supervision. A Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by GM would rank as the third largest bankruptcy in US history following Lehman Brothers' collapse and the failure of telecoms giant WorldCom.
European deal
The restructuring is likely to drastically change General Motors, with some 20,000 workers thought likely to lose their jobs. GM has been forced to slash its European operations. Our correspondent says long-established subsidiaries Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer, as well as Saab, the remaining GM brand in Europe, are under threat as production plants are expected to close across the country. GM's European arm is likely to be spared bankruptcy following a proposed deal by Canadian car parts maker Magna International to buy GM Europe's Vauxhall and Opel brands. However, unions fear that jobs may be lost at Vauxhall plants in Luton and Ellesmere Port, which employ 5,500 people. UK Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said he had received further assurance from GM Europe that Vauxhall production would remain in the UK. Jobs may also go in Belgium, Poland and Spain. GM, once the largest company in the world, has been losing market share since the early 1980s.
